How are underground railways built?

Under the cities lie the foundations of large buildings and many pipes which transport water, gas electricity and telephone cables. Underground railway builders have two options. They can either dig deep tunnels or they can run the railway under the existing roads. In the latter, a large trench is dug along the road and closed again after the railway is built.
