Namaste
In India the word ‘Namaste’ is used as a word of greeting. Many think it is the equivalent of saying, ‘Good morning’. ‘Namaste’ and ‘Good Morning’ have only one thing in common and that is when you greet someone with either of them, you wish them well.
The word ‘Namaste’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Namas’. When you say ‘Namaste’ to someone, you are actually saying ‘I bow to you’. A lot of feelings are depicted by this one word; respect, humility and honor. ‘Namaste’ actually says, “The light in me greets the light in you”
Typically ‘Namaste’ is accompanied with the bowing of the head ever so slightly while bringing both hands together, palms touching, in front of the person usually at the chest. ‘Namaste’ is the traditional way that Indians greet each other. The new generation prefers to say ‘Good morning’ but ‘Namaste’ is still used to greet elders.
