Deluge in Mumbai

It had been raining for two days continuously. On 24/06/2005, we were at school when the Principal announced a half day on account of the incessant rains. No child was allowed to leave without the parent. As we waited for our parents to come we looked out of the window. It was over cast and the entire playground looked like it was immersed in water The gates were flooded.

My mom came to pick me up. She put my bag over her shoulder and then she hoisted me over her neck and told me to hang onto her real tight. The water was till mom’s waist and although mom is tall she’s not that strong. She stumbled a couple of times because of the current in the water, but I hung on to her. I was scared. There were things floating in the water. We saw several dead bodies of animals floating. I shut my eyes and prayed that we would get home safely. We made it home safe but whenever it rains it brings back memories of 24/06/2005.
