My Experience Of Celebrating The Joy Of Giving Week
In today’s fast-paced world, people become too involved with their own belief to care about the people around them. To expose and explain the students about the lives of people around them, our school celebrated the ‘Joy of Giving’ week. Over thousand students from my school participated in the weeklong initiative, which also honoured Grandparents’ Day and World Senior Citizens’ Day.
The main reason in initiating the event was to instill the love and care for the fellow human beings among us. The students from class V to X enthusiastically collected large quantities of rice, sugar, pulses, toys, biscuits, colours, clothes, canned milk foods and stationary items. We decided to distribute all these things in the nearby slum areas and among the orphans at different parts of the town.
According to me, the privileged section of society must understand the importance of charity. Every underprivileged person deserves to smile like others. However, for this event we decided to present a unique twist to the concept of giving, by inviting our parents to the school in order to express their feelings for them through poems, speeches and short songs. It turned out to be an emotional experience for many. This thoughtful and touching event was cherished by the parents.
During the week, nearly 100 grandparents and 50 people from a nearby old-age home were invited to the school for a cultural programme. They were presented with a shawl and a bouquet. Our Principal said, that such inter-generational event involving the old and the young not only brought joy and benefit to the generations but also strengthened the bond between them.
The most important feature of the joy of giving week was the road safety initiative. Students along with their teachers took their places at traffic signals in the vicinity. Motorists who followed all the traffic rules were rewarded with appreciation cards and goodies. We also gave badges advocating safe driving. School workers and bus attendants were also presented with goodies.
Many people believe that in a country whose culture is highly famous around the world has lost its values and magnificence. With every type of activity, we take a step closer to a world of people overflowing with ideas of unity and respect for each other. Spreading happiness costs nothing. Learning this value at a very young age will gift our society with individuals who will strive for the greater good.
