A most glamorous and one of the best-known departments of the Federal Government is FBI. Its full form is the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was founded in the year 1908, as a bureau within the United States Department of Justice.
The FBI is vested with the authority to investigate violations of Federal laws and matters in which the United States is, or may be, a party in interest. In the year 1924, the Identification Division of the F.B.I. was created. It started with a library of 810,188 fingerprint cards. Now the FBI has more than 100,000,000 people.
FBI is headquartered in Washington, DC. Along with its its responsibilities, the FBI is a service organization for local law enforcement agencies. Its service facilities are available for the assistance of municipal, county, and state police department.
The identification division serves as the control clearing house for fingerprints and criminal data. The fingerprints of an arrested person are sent to FBI, and an assessment can be made within five minutes, whether he has a previous criminal record. A copy of this record is sent to interested law enforcement agency within 36 hours of the receipt of card in Washington.
The FBI laboratory are also available to all the law enforcement agencies. The scientists are provided with modern equipment. They are everyday at work and examine the blood, hair, soil, documents and other types of matter. The examination of evidence in a local case is carried out. The FBI experts have to testify the findings in the state court.
The President of the United States selected in June 1939 the FBI as the agency responsible for the investigation of espionage, sabotage, and other defence and national matters.
