Evening Classes for the Uneducated
While returning from a movie one night, we saw Camilla didi, drive into her house. As we spoke, she said that she was returning from the evening classes she conducts for slum dwellers. I didn’t quite understand the idea and so went back to her the next morning to know more. What I learnt that day made me feel proud of her.
She said, “Education is a primary need for building a strong society. A large section of our population is deprived of this necessity. It is we educated who have to assist in nation-building. Evening classes are thus a good way of contributing.” She conducts separate classes for men, women & children and has three volunteers from her office to assist. They get books from the ‘ShikshaAbhiyaan’ office and use a school building from 6 pm to 9 pm. Beginning with a meager 5 students, they now have 50. The job is tough, especially after a whole day’s work, but nonetheless satisfying. “I want to join you, Camilla didi, and spread the light of learning”, I said. You too can join the chain.
