My Visit to The London Bridge
Childhood begins with a mandatory recitation of the rhyme “London Bridge is falling down”. On a similar note, a trip to London begins with a visit to the London Bridge.
The Bridge connects the city of London and Southwark over the River Thames. A second bridge which is further upstream across the Thames, called Tower Bridge, is often mistakenly referred to as “London Bridge”. These are however two separate structures. The current bridge was opened in 1973. It comprises three spans of concrete box girders, is 262 meters long, 32 meters wide, with clearance below 8.9 meters, and has 5 lanes. The lights adorning the sides were made from Napoleon’s cannons. The vibrant atmosphere around the bridge is palpable with famous buildings like the Globe Theatre, museum, art gallery, Butler’s wharf market and Borough market being thronged by people the whole day long. This historical bridge has given London a place in every child’s heart by featuring in the poem and is a must-see destination.
