R. Narayana Murthy
Born in 1946 and an engineer by profession, Narayana Murthy founded Infosys in 1981 with Rs 10,000 borrowed from his wife. It was a step that brought about an IT revolution in India and put the country and its talented people on the global map. Infosys today, is the biggest Information Technology set-up in India and is acknowledged the world over for its innovative, dynamic and fair practices. The company provides consultancy and software services to many organizations in India and abroad. Mr Murthy headed the firm till 2002 and through 21 years, took the company to great heights of success. Today, he continues to be the non-executive chairman of the Board and has now stepped up initiatives on social causes. What makes him different is his clarity of vision and impeccable execution, his concern for clients and employees alike, at no point compromising on business practices.
He is on the Board of many national and overseas engineering and business schools including INSEAD, Wharton, Harvard and IIM Ahmedabad, He has received several honours and awards including Business India’s “Businessman of the year 1999”, “Padma Vibhushan” (2008), and “Legion of Honour” from the France Government (2008). He is known for his simplicity. The beauty about this family is that they believe in sharing their wealth with the needy.
