A True Citizen

Being a citizen of India is a privilege. This privilege is accompanied by certain duties which ought to be carried out. These duties benefit the nation and also promote a feeling of patriotism among the citizens. Our duty is to respect the national symbols and the Constitution of India, cherish India’s heritage and assist in its defense. We must promote equality of all individuals, protect the environment and public property, develop scientific temper, abjure violence, strive towards excellence in every field, and provide free and compulsory education.

However, not all these duties are diligently carried out by us. This is perhaps due to the pressures of gaining an education and earning a living in an increasingly corrupt society and bureaucratic government. However, we must not shirk from our true duty of restoring pride in ourselves of being an Indian. We can do so by ensuring that nothing takes us away from the path of our duties towards our country and inculcate in ourselves- righteousness, honesty, and diligence in work.
