Global Warming
The population of the world is increasing every day. With the advance of science and technology, more and more vehicles are being used by man. These vehicles emit various gases that continue to pollute the air all around. In his greed and because of his increasing material needs, trees are being cut by man everywhere every day. The forest cover on this planet is, therefore, withering away day by day.
It appears that this beautiful planet is slowly marching towards death. Increasing pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, CFC’s, methyl chloroform, etc. are destroying the ozone layer that acts as a protective cover over the atmosphere. This layer protects the earth from the harmful ultraviolet rays coming from the sun. Polluting gases are thinning the ozone layer and are creating holes in it. Ultraviolet rays can cause diseases like skin cancer. They can also damage the plants in a big way. This can gradually lead to the destruction of life on this planet.
This alarming increase in poisonous gases in the atmosphere is called Global Warming or the Greenhouse Effect. Global warming is taking place at a seriously dangerous rate due to the burning of coal, petrol, diesel in automobiles, factories, planes, etc. Global warming is likely to increase the process of melting of glaciers. This can cause unprecedented floods and raise the level of water in the seas. It will further lead to massive deforestation and degradation of air, water and land.
One shudders to think of the results of Global Warming. It can lead to the total extinction of life on earth. In case mankind does not rise to the occasion and take some immediate protective steps, it might lead to a disaster. The only remedy lies in controlling the discharge of carbon dioxide and other harmful gases into the atmosphere and a massive worldwide plantation of trees.
Various world organizations are already in touch with the problem. They are aware of the problem staring into the face of humankind. The environment experts are holding meetings and conferences to find out the remedies. They are trying to put pressure on various countries of the world to keep their pollution level under control. Even though much success has not been achieved so far, it is hoped that the problem would be tackled before it is too late. We must either plan our future or perish.
