The Nuclear Treaty
The Indo- US Nuclear Treaty which was initiated in 2005 reached a conclusive end in 2008, with the IAEA approving the safeguards. In simple terms, India will now be able to take US assistance for its civilian nuclear energy program. With a gross shortage of electricity hampering the nation’s growth, the energy generated through the plants set up in this deal, will go a long way in helping India take large strides towards a better future for its industries and the masses. The deal will also help expand cooperation in energy and satellite technology. India will now be permitted to buy nuclear technology including materials and equipment to enrich uranium or reprocess plutonium, and also import fuel for its nuclear reactors from the USA. IAEA would be permitted access to 14 of the 22 reactors to assure that the nuclear plant is generating energy for peaceful purposes alone. It is a landmark deal that should improve future prospects for the country.
