A steamer on the Mississippi struck a submerged wreck and began to sink. It had been filled to capacity and most of the passengers were miners from California.

The lifeboats could only accommodate one-quarter of the passengers on board. The rest were forced to abandon their belongings, plunge into the water and swim ashore.
