Bollywood Dancing
Dancing comes naturally to Indians. It’s in our genes. Bollywood dancing which is a quintessential part of Bollywood movies is not as frivolous as its name suggests. It is the commercial name for modern Indian dancing but it is the combination of classical Indian dance, folk dance, and has been known to occasionally show Latino and Arabic influences as well. That we are a nation obsessed with dancing is proved by the number of movies churned out every year by Bollywood which lack story but make up for it with amazing music and dance sequences.
Bollywood dancing is referred to internationally as ‘running around the trees’. True, we Indians do have an obsession for the outdoors and don’t need an excuse to break in to a song and dance but Bollywood dancing is not as simple as it might seem. Unlike Western dancing where you have fixed steps and work in a framework of steps matched to certain beats, Bollywood dancing is about footwork, the movement of arms and the subtle change in facial expressions. It is usually accompanied by Bollywood music and-everything from the leg movements, the -hand movements, to the facial movements communicate the gist of the song.
So while you are busy trying to maneuver your feet to the rhythm, your hands are gently gesticulating while your eyes are connecting with and talking to your audiences. The beauty of Bollywood dancing is that you don’t need a partner, you can dance solo. All you need is some foot-tapping music and a body ready to immerse itself in the crazy beats of it’s rhythm.
