Freedom of The Press
We, the fortunate citizens of a free country enjoy the freedom to self-expression amongst other forms of freedom. Freedom of the Press is an offshoot of the same. The Press allows us to communicate our views to a larger audience; it allows the citizens to gain knowledge about things that are happening in our country and the world over without bias- just the way it is.
The Freedom of the Press is essential to any Nation as it plays a major role in acquainting the citizens to all the occurrences that take place in various parts of the country and the world, while sitting at home. If this freedom is taken away, the Press ends up serving a certain thought or a certain perspective and therefore, fails to be unbiased. Yet, certain restrictions are imposed on the Press in the better interests of the society and the Nation. Certain information mostly political in nature or related to the Defence is best kept under wraps and withheld from the public for the larger interests of the Nation. In 1975, Indira Gandhi government imposed censorship of press during the Emergency. It was removed at the end of the Emergency rule.
Censorship of the Press and media are necessary when done keeping the sensibilities of the population in mind. The Press must enjoy maximum Freedom so as to bring out the truth and not be employed for the purpose of defamation of a person or persons or establishments. “Satyameva Jayate.”
