My Most Unforgettable Experience

I have had a few unforgettable experiences in my life, but the one that stands out the most is during a trip to Jaisalmer, the lovely desert city of India. Nicknamed “The Golden City”, it is a town in the state of Rajasthan. The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples are finely sculptured. Nearly a fourth of the old city’s population resides within the fort.

My experience was made unforgettable by the beautiful people of this beautiful city. It started off as any other day with my friends and me sightseeing around the city. We looked at all the famous landmarks the city had to offer and by afternoon, we were walking around the old city part inside the fort. It was afternoon and we were all tired and hungry. So we sat down in the porch of one of the houses for rest. The delicious aroma of freshly cooked food wafted outside tingling our taste buds and making us aware of our hunger pangs. Through whispers, we were guessing the type of food being cooked and how delicious it would be and so on, when suddenly a small girl of 10 came out side with a big plate filled with fluffy rotis, hot dal and some hot Subji and laid it in front of us.

We were pleasantly surprised and moved, and when questioned, the little girl Rani replied that her mother could hear our whispered “food talk” and decided to let us test for ourselves if the food was as tasty as it smelled; further the lady of the house considered the presence of uninvited guests as akin to God himself visiting them. This simple gesture brought tears to our eyes and made it one of the most unforgettable experiences in my life. The Indian scriptures state that any uninvited guest is god and it is heartening to know that this is still being practiced in our country.
