Progress of Television and Role of Cinema
One can find all possible worldwide information of various events through television. Television has succeeded in capturing the minds and imagination of people through new channels. Doordarshan is considered as the most genuine from of all channels that has always relayed right news to people. Television enlightens people on different issues. Today, more than 500 Indian and foreign channels have become important sources of information.
In 1959, at a trade fair in New Delhi, a British firm named ‘Phillips’ exhibited a close circuit unit of television. They presented the equipment to the Government of India. The Government decided to start educational programmes under the direction of P.L. Deshpande, Kamleshwar and playwright Purashottam Darvhekar.
On 15th September 1959, there was first transmission. It relayed a social presentation of Pandit Omkarnath Thakur. In April 1976, Aakashwani and Doordarshan separated as two individual departments. The name `Doordarshan’ was given to television, which was owned by Indian Government. In 1982, colour television was introduced in India during the time of Asiad games. Next year, National channel began its relay of programmes.
In the coming times, Doordarshan extended its service with the beginning of channels such as D.D. Metro, D.D. Sports, D.D. Movie club, D.D. News, D.D. International, D.D. Bharti and 10 other regional channels like Marathi and Bengali.
As cinema is audio-visual medium, it has created deep influence on society. The two important roles that cinema performs are entertainment and job opportunities.
Cinema is regarded as the prime source of entertainment. Different types of cinema can be created according to the choices of people. There can be shows in theatres, videos or television. Special movie channels for almost twenty-four hours have started on television.
Film industry offers large variety of employment opportunities to people. Some of the important jobs available in this industry are technicians, singers, musicians, choreographers, dancers, dress designers, storywriters and even labourers. In the same way, actors, villains, comedians and many other performers and helpers are required. Thus, today several jobs opportunities are open for all skilled people who are interested in the making of cinema.
