The Arduous Duties of the Police
Society
Our society consists of a number of people of different religions belonging to different states. But we have one of the important forces to serve us or, in other words, to save us from burglars and thieves, etc. and that is the police force.
Law and order
This force like the society consists of people of different religions. Without this force, it is not easy for an honest and a gentleman to live in a society which is full of powerful and cunning persons and the crimes are bound to be on the rise day by day if this force does not work properly. The duties of the police are very hard. They have to patrol the streets even on the chilling nights, particularly in the areas which are full of criminals or in the areas where they feel the greatest danger to the common people from antisocial elements.
Invention of automatic weapons and landmines
The life of a policeman is full of danger and he has to be careful, at every step of life. With the invention of automatic weapons and landmines the duty of a policeman has gone harder and he has to be more skilful and wise so as to save the society as well as himself.
Policemen as body-guards
This force has to serve the society in many ways. The policemen have to serve as bodyguards of an influential or a powerful person of the society, on the orders of higher authorities. Sometimes they have to apply a lathi charge or have to throw tear gas shells to scatter the violent mob.
Dealing with students
Sometimes they have to arrest and beat college students who try to destroy the government property. It is a well-disciplined force.
Service above self
The policemen have always to be ready to sacrifice their lives for the nation. Hence in certain cases, they have to fight bravely with the gangs of robbers or burglars and sometimes they have even to face bullets from them.
They check the luggage of people in buses and trains, with great care; hence they try their best to save the public from antisocial elements who bring explosives into our country to terrorize the common man. In such cases, many policemen have to lose their lives, when such explosives explode during checking.
A disciplined force
The life of a policeman is a disciplined one. He is a public – servant who always remains ready to sacrifice his life for the common people.
Frisking
It’s wrong to criticize the policemen or the system of police without any rhyme or reason. But it must be admitted that sometimes, like all human beings, the policemen also make mistakes and even indulge in excessive use of force. But instead of making sweeping statements against them, they should be trained not only in the use of arms and pursuit and tracking down of robbers, burglars, pickpockets and other anti-social elements, but also in human qualities and virtues such as politeness, the sweetness of manners, suavity, sincerity, fulfilment of duty, human and humane treatment to all concerned, etc.
Supreme sacrifice for society and the nation.
Human beings in spite of certain similar basic instincts have so many variations in behaviour and action as per age, status, income, the matter of education, sex, occupation, profession, the atmosphere at home and at the working place etc. So, the policemen should be taught how to adapt themselves to the treatment to be meted out to different sections of society such as students, teachers, doctors, lawyers, factory workers, senior citizens, women, rural illiterate people, office employees and other white collared people. Thus, the policemen also need some training in the psychological study of people from different sections of society. Kiran Bedi, a high ranking police officer, can serve as a model to the entire police force.
