First Of All, I When Were The Rockets Used?
We have noticed a lawn sprinkler work. It spins around and around and sprays water in a circle. This is actually the principle of the rocket at work. The water in the sprinkler was escaping in one direction. This force pushed the sprinkler in the opposite direction. In a rocket, a fast-burning fuel or explosive exerts force in one direction, and this pushes the rocket toward in the opposite direction.
We think to be living in the age of rockets. Rockets are rather a new invention. The rockets are in actual a very old idea. These were invented by Chinese. It was more than 800 years ago. They used them as fireworks. Later on, these became known in Arabian. and Indian countries. Their first record of being in Western Europe was in AD 1256. Their first use in war was similar to the burning arrows. They were aimed and fired at houses to set them on fire. Soldiers and sailors continued their use as signals, but they were not in use for a war for quite sometimes.
Army captain read in 180, how their troops in India had been attacked with rockets. This is how they got an idea of trying them out with British army. The experiment was successful and very soon most European armies as well as the armies of the United States began to use the war rockets.
In the battle of Leipzig, in Europe, the rockets were used. Napoleon was defeated. In the United States, the English used war rockets in the bombardment of fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbour. This is the reason why in the national anthem of the United States, there is the phrase, “the rocket’s red glare”!
During the 19th century, as artillery became more powerful and more accurate, and were replaced. They were not important until again World War II and the famous German V-2 rocket.
