How Does A Duck Float?
We refer to a wide variety of birds when using the word “duck”. The range is vast, starting from familiar barnyard type to the wild traveler in the skies. The duck family in fact includes swans, mergansers or fishing ducks, geese, tree ducks, dabbling ducks, and the ruddy ducks.
Most of the wild ducks breed from the Canadian border states to the limit of trees in the far North. During winter they travel to the Central and Southern States. Their period of stay in the South is very short. They head for home with the breaking of the ice in the North. Towards home, they settle for streams, ponds, marshes, lakeshores, and sea coasts.
Ducks do not have any problem and can live in icy waters. Their outer coat of loosely packed feathers helps them, being water-proof, to stay afloat. There is a gland near the duck’s tail, that gives off oil, which spreads over the feathers. There is a layer of thick down, underneath this coat, that affords further protection. The webs of a duck are so designed, as to protect them from the cold water. There are no nerves or blood in the web feet, and thus they do not feel cold.
The homing of duck’s feet and legs are far back on the body and this aspect is helpful is swimming. It gives them that The homing of duck’s feet and legs are far back on the body peculiar waddle when they walk. Through the air, a duck can move pretty fast, too in short flights. The ducks are known to go as fast as over one hundred kilometers an hour.
Generally speaking, duck build their nests on the ground but close to water. They line the nest with delicate plants and with down from the duck’s own breasts. This warm down covers the eggs when the female is away from the rest. Normally a duck lays from six to fourteen eggs. The female sits on the eggs.
Ducks molt, shed their feathers, after the breeding season. Ducks cannot fly during this period because their wing quills are gone. They manage t avoid the attention of enemies by remaining quiet, with a purpose to seek safety. There are about 160 different types of species of ducks in the world. They are found on every continent, except Antarctica. The number of species in North America is about forty.
