Most of the wild ducks breed from the Canadian border states to the limit of trees in the far North. During winter they travel to the Central and Southern States. Their period of stay in the South is very short. They head for home with the breaking of the ice in the North. Towards home, they settle for streams, ponds, marshes, lakeshores, and sea coasts.

Ducks do not have any problem and can live in icy waters. Their outer coat of loosely packed feathers helps them, being water-proof, to stay afloat. There is a gland near the duck’s tail, that gives off oil, which spreads over the feathers. There is a layer of thick down, underneath this coat, that affords further protection.
