Why Some People Are Left-Handed?
Some children are left-handed. The parents of many worry so much about this condition. They try to correct it. But, most medical men do not encourage. They believe that if the individual has a strong preference to use left hand and is able to perform well, then he should not be caused any interference. Figures are there to speak that about few per cent of the world population is left handed. History speaks about many a genius who were left-handed. Leonardo da Vinci and Michel Angelo, the greatest sculptors of all times, were both left handed.
Broadly, our society is “Right-handed society”. Most of the things made by right-handed people are used by us. Our locks, screw-drivers, automobiles, musical instrument and door knobs, and also the buttons on our clothes are made for use by left-handed people. A certain degree of adjustment is required to be made by left-handed people, but fortunately majority of them can manage very well.
There is no single accepted explanation of what makes most people right-handed and a small minority left-handed. However, one theory is available. Our body is not “symmetrical” and our left side is not exactly the same as our sight side. Our right side of face is a little different from the left side. Our legs differ in strength. The size of our feet may differ a bit. Thus ‘asymmetry’ goes through our whole body.
Coming to brain, it has right half and left half. The two halves do not function the same way. It is believed that the left-half of our brain is predominant over right-half. The nerves from brain cross over at the neck level and go to the opposite side of our body. The right half of the brain supplies the left half of the body and vice versa.
Since left half of the brain predominates as much right half of the body is more skilled and better able to do things. We write, read, speak and work with left half of the brain and thus most of us are right handed. But in case of left-handed people, there is an ‘inversion’. The right-half of the brain is predominant, and such a person works best with the left side of his body.
