Parts of speech are to grammar what letters are to reading and writing. Parts of speech helps be understanding the use of words and how words can be put together to communicate. Parts of speech are used to organize words in accordance to the way they are used. They make it easier to understand language.

Parts of speech are the categories that classify the words in English. There are eight parts of speech. English is a complex language and therein lies its beauty. Sometimes its difficult to tell which category a word belongs to because depending on how the word is used it could belong to several categories. Knowing the different parts of speech really helps. Sometimes you may come across a new word you do not understand but depending on the way it is used you will have an idea as to what it describes or implies.

If you look up any word in the dictionary you will find not only its meaning but also what part of speech it is. Knowing which part of speech a word belongs to helps you use an unknown word correctly in a sentence.
