World’s first smartphone for the visually impaired

A post-graduate diploma in information and interface design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, SumitDagar has developed a smartphone that can convert any SMS or email sent in any 14language into Braille. The phone is based on an innovative touchscreen capable of elevating and depressing the contents it receives to transform them into touchable patterns’.

Dagar started this project around 2010 when he was studying interactive designing at NID. He worked for a couple of companies but gave up his job to start his own venture – Kriyate Design Solutions – with six others, so he could perfect the smartphone. This became possible with funding under the Young Laureates Programme by Rolex Awards. Only five people across the globe are selected every two years and their projects are funded under the award.
