Lord North, former Prime Minister of England, used to sleep during the parliamentary harangues of his adversaries. For his benefit, Sir Grey Copper would note down anything important the speaker had said. During a debate on shipbuilding, a tedious speaker went into great historical detail. He commenced with Noah’s ark and traced the progress of art through the centuries. When he was expatiating on the construction of the Spanish Armada, Sir Grey accidentally awoke the slumbering Prime Minister.

“In which era is the honourable gentleman now, Sir Grey?” the prime minister asked.

“We are now in the reign of Queen Elizabeth,” was the answer.
