A True Citizen
Every Nation has laws of citizenship which vary from one another but are laid down in the best interests of the country. In a democratic nation, citizens enjoy certain fundamental rights but are also duty bound to be responsible. A true citizen is one whose actions strengthen the Nation.
In India, citizens have the rights to equality, freedom, freedom against exploitation, freedom of religion, educational and cultural rights and rights to constitutional remedies. However, the citizens have duties too. To abide by the Constitution and respect the ideals and Institutions, to respect the National Flag and the National Anthem, to realize and follow the essential ideals of secularism, democracy and non-violence, to preserve the culture and heritage, to protect the Sovereignty, Unity and Integrity of the nation, to safeguard the public property, to defend the country even at the cost of our life, to protect natural resources, to avoid Dowry, Gambling, and other Social evils and to strive towards excellence in our respective spheres of activities are some of the duties we have to abide by and we ought to do so willingly.
The Nation does so much for us and despite our constant mutterings of dissatisfaction; the truth is that we receive much more from our country than we give to it. A true citizen will conduct himself in such a manner that his Nation be looked up to with the honour it so rightly deserves.
