Articles
An article is a kind of adjective which gives information about a noun and is always used with a noun. There are only two articles an and the, but they are used in abundance.
The word ‘a’ is called the indefinite article because the noun it goes with is indefinite or general. The meaning of article ‘a’ is similar to number one. I have a book is the same as I have one book. but the number one in the second sentence emphasizes the exact number of books. The article a becomes and when it precedes words starting with vowels a,e,i,o,u.
The word ‘the’ is known as the definite article and indicates a specific thing. The difference between the sentences. I read a book and I read the book is that the second sentence refers to a specific book not just any book.
Whenever you see an article, you will find a noun in the sentence. The noun may be the next word as in (the woman) or there might be an adjective and perhaps adverbs between the article and the noun as in (The very angry, young woman)
