My Favourite Sportsman – Sunil Gavaskr

Sunil Gavaskar who retired from active cricket in 1987 is my favourite sportsman. He is popularly known as Sunny Gavaskar. He is justly described as the Little Master. Sunny made his first appearance in test cricket in March 1971 against the West Indies. He made 774 runs in just seven matches. His performance won the hearts of all cricket lovers.

Openers like Sunil Gavaskar are very rare. He has a cool head and excellent foot-work. His approach to batting was technically very sound. It was very seldom that he failed to do well. Sunil played in the classical style. His batting was a model for learners. He could hook, cut, and glance with ease and confidence.

Sunil had a number of records to his credit. He scored 34 test centuries in his cricketing career. He made 10122 runs in the test cricket. He is the only batsman in the world to score a century in both innings of a test thrice. He is the only batsman who hit three hundreds in consecutive innings twice. The list of his records is very long.

Besides being a good player, Sunny was an able captain. He proved a successful Indian Captain. As a captain he won more tests than he lost. Under his captaincy India won eight tests and lost six. He was shrewd judge of the game. It is no wonder that I admire him.
