Fashion Fads
Fashion fads are defined as certain types or styles in clothing that are currently “in” or “out” by the fashion sense. As we have come to the end of the 20th Century, and the beginning of the 21′, it’s fascinating to look back over the past 100 years and explore the changes in the fashion scenario. Fads in clothing, in houses, in music, in every area of our lives, come and go. At one-time bell bottoms in pants and psychedelic prints were “in” and even the decor in people’s houses matched the fashion. Thirty years later those same colors and prints are repulsive to us.
Vintage clothing and fashion fads tell a lot about a culture. In India Fashion and Bollywood go hand in hand. Bollywood inspires fashion and creates trends making them popular with the masses. The common people have followed the Indian fashion fads through movies and their film stars. In the early days, Dev Anand popularized full sleeves top collared shirts. Leg-hugging pajamas and no side-split kurtis were a rage with college girls in the 60s. The fad then changed to the punk style of the 80’s. The evolution of fashion over the decades tells us a lot about the evolution of society.
The traditional sari of India is the current garment to come under the spotlight. Current fads say that the sari can be worn with a belt as an accessory. The sari, say fashion designers, can be worn over a pair of jeans or jazzed up with a sexy slim belt for a trendy look. Designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Nida Mahmood showcased the sari in new avatars at the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW). Fashion fads come and go, but while they last, they provide ample entertainment.
