My Magic Lamp
The Arabian nights are a wonderful creation indeed. Aladdin and his genie who captured our attention as children, are still going strong so many years later. The concept of a genie has been exploited in different stories since. As a child, before I got my belief of the mail van, I used to be awed by the magic lamp of Aladdin. I even dreamt of possessing one. The thought of the genie intimidated me, though. Once, as I was rummaging the contents of a nearly discarded trunk in the garage, I chanced upon a brass lamp. Since my head was filled with Aladdin, I could see this lamp as none else. Actually, the shape of this lamp was very different but in my desperation to believe, even at that young age I convinced myself that no one had really seen that lamp either! I stole the lamp under my top, into my room lest my mother should chide me for snooping in the garage. In the quiet of my room, I rubbed the lamp. Almost immediately, the door opened and smoke filled the room. I was thrilled till I realized I was being dragged out of the room by my father as the kitchen was on fire due to a frying negligence.
My belief was busted then since subsequent attempts failed too. I mentioned it to my father who told me that the lamp would not come to me as I had everything I needed.
