Why does hair come in different colours?

At the root of the hair are cells which have a pigment called melanin. When the cells die they leave granules of pigment in the hair. The granules come in many shades of brown. The horny shaft of the hair in which the pigment is embedded is yellow. The colours of the shaft and the granules mix, giving hair its different colours.
