A Hit-And-Run Accident
The summer vacations had started and for us it was a time for enjoyment, fun and different games. In and around the areas of our housing society, we enjoyed riding our bicycles. The area where we lived is relatively quiet and quite safe to ride bicycles on the road. As young boys, we tend to get a bit reckless sometimes while riding our bicycles.
It was just a matter of time before something tragic occurred with me. One evening as I was speeding down a road on my bicycles, a truck abruptly appeared out of a side road right in my path. The driver was obviously a stranger to the area and did not see the danger until it was too late. He braked hard and swerved his truck in an attempt to avoid hitting me. Unfortunately, he could not avoid hitting me. The front end of the truck collided with my bicycle with a dreadful crisis. I was thrown at the corner of the road.
The truck stopped. The driver opened the door, but he did not get out. Instead, he closed the door, reversed his truck, wrecked my bicycle, engaged a forward gear and sped off. He escaped to avoid dealing with the angry residents knowing that he might be hit violently or perhaps even killed.
Soon some of the residents ran out of their houses and onto the scene of the accident. I found myself still alive, but I was in deep agony. One of the men lifted me, put me into a neighbour’s car and took me to the nearby hospital.
Nobody had noted down the number of the truck. All they knew was that it was driven by a young man, nothing more. To this day, the identity of the hit-and-run truck is unknown. I am alive but I limp while walking. Although the incident was not a pleasant one, it at least had a deep impact on young minds. Now the young cyclists do not ride recklessly around anymore. Their parents have become alert and do not want the same tragic incident to occur with their children.
