The home is where some of our best and worst habits are formed. It is necessary for us to make our home habits much healthier, eco-friendly and organized.
Turning off electrical devices when not in use is the most common way to conserve electricity. We should plug off electrical appliances after turning them off. This prevents their wasteful use of energy. We should keep our home free of mess and dust. Air filters should be changed on a regular basis and other appliances like fans, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. should be cleaned regularly. Using ceiling fans helps in controlling the climate.
We must inspect and refine our habits with regard to consumption, shopping and recycling. Recycling can provide more than the mere reward of eco-friendly living. Moreover, paper shopping bags should be chosen over plastic bags. While shopping we can carry a reusable bag from home or adopt creative ways to reuse plastic shopping bags. Plastic bags do not easily decay. They are bad for the environment, but good for those who reuse it.
While purchasing any electrical home item we must look for the Energy Star label. Using such items reward through lowered bills. Home items such as, computers and home entertainment equipment can also carry the Energy Star label. Televisions, which meet Energy Star requirements, use around 40 present less energy than models without the label.
Adopting more eco-friendly traveling habits will greatly reduce one’s carbon footprint. The most obvious green traveling habits involve bicycling, walking or other methods of transport that do not rely on fuel. Walking requires a good pair of shoes. Developing a habit of walking over short distances increases engagement with the society and decrease dependence on fuel.
Bicycling also provides a healthy energy-free way of getting around. Well-planned routes can often lead to a quicker travel-time than cars, especially over smaller distances and through congested areas.
Those who travel longer distances should use public transportation facilities. Independent drivers should keep their tires properly inflated and cars in perfect condition. Well-running engines of the vehicles use less energy. They significantly provide better gas mileage. Properly inflated tires add around to the fuel economy of a vehicle.
Eco-friendly habits can help to strengthen the skills related to learning and study. Conservation, problem solving and creative thinking are all by-products of energy-efficient living. We must improve our habits to reap the benefits of living in eco-friendly environment.
