Punjab- The Feeding Bowl Of India
I am a farmer and live in Punjab. The main crops I grow are wheat, rice, maize, cotton and sugarcane. My fellow farmers grow some or more of these and other crops such as pulses, bajra, jowar, barley, mustard, groundnut etc. and fruits and vegetables. We realize the maximum yield potential and remain engaged the whole year. A large part of our success can be attributed to the government agencies that help and support us by the well-timed supply of various inputs, be it irrigation water, fertilizers, high quality seeds, pesticides or technical and extension services.
My friends or farming community members coming from other parts of the country always praise our hard labour and devotion to the vocation of farming. Ours is a surplus state and we export large quantities of food materials to other parts of the country. Punjab is therefore, rightly called ‘the feeding bowl of India’ and I am proud to be a small contributory in this path.
